What is Kambo?
Kambo is a traditional medicine which, when administered, induces strong bodily responses that cause a physical and emotional release of toxins and trauma, helping the body, mind and spirit to come back into balance. Its use has become widespread throughout the world in recent years. It is a non psychoactive, legal and completely safe medicine when administered responsibly by a trained practitioner.
Scientific research has now shown that the Kambo secretion contains a unique and highly complex chemical cocktail of bioactive peptides, proteins and alkaloids that are beneficial to the human body. Though exactly how all these compounds so synergistically interact together within the secretion to create Kambo’s profound effects remains a great mystery to science. Kambo seems to ‘go to work’ in the body with an innate intelligence, ‘scanning’ for problems and targeting specific areas. It is in this sense, which surpasses our traditional western scientific understanding, that the Natives speak of the spirit of Kambo, and why Kambo is considered not just a physical detox, but an energetic medicine.
Kambo is used for many reasons that vary from tribe to tribe, as do the traditions and rituals associated with it. Today, aside from the many traditionally perceived benefits of Kambo, such as that it strengthens the body or cleanses negative energies, Kambo is believed to have countless other health benefits and has been shown to be effective against many (modern) diseases (see list below).
Traditionally, there are three main uses of Kambo:
The first use of Kambo is as ‘Hunting Magic‘, that is, to prepare and strengthen the hunters of the tribe for the hunt, upon whom the whole community depends for survival. It is said to enhance the senses and ability to focus, as well as increase the strength, stamina and speed of those who use it. Though none of us in the West are hunters anymore who directly depend upon physical strength and fine-tuned senses for our survival, we still benefit from Kambo’s Hunting Magic qualities. We all chase after goals in our lives in a way that requires sensitivity, focus and endurance. Kambo can help us in navigating the often stressful and overwhelming terrain of our modern lives, reminding us to remain calm, focused and centred in ourselves.
Kambo is also used to restore and improve physical health. By cleansing the body of toxins and disease agents and strengthening the immune system, Kambo is a great promoter of health, wellbeing and vitality. It helps our bodies not only to recover more quickly from dis-ease, but also to prevent us from becoming sick in the first place. Kambo is a powerful analgesic (pain reliever) and one of the strongest natural antibiotics found in the world. Malaria, snake bites, fevers, infections and fertility problems are all examples of conditions Kambo has traditionally been used to treat. Today, in the West, we have also seen Kambo show amazing results against a host of (modern) chronic diseases ranging from HIV to Cancer (see list below).
Panema is a word used by the people of the Amazon to signify the dark, heavy or stagnant energy we carry in and around us, which, according to traditional wisdom, is the source of sickness, negative thoughts, depression, and even bad luck. Kambo is believed to clear the body, mind and spirit of this negative energy, helping one to overcome mental and emotional challenges, cultivate spiritual wealth and become healthier and happier. Though the concept and workings of Panema may feel foreign to us, it is not difficult to see this powerful effect of Kambo manifested in people’s lives, as one of the most celebrated, widespread and successful uses of Kambo in the Western world today is as a treatment for depression and addiction.
Kambo affects people in very different ways and the results are hard to quantify, however, these are some of the benefits people report after receiving Kambo:
- General mood enhancement
- Getting sick less frequently
- Having more energy
- Heightened awareness and focus
- Clarity of mind
- Resilience to stress and fatigue
- An increased sense of well-being
- Increased emotional stability
- Overcoming blockages and obstacles
- Letting go of past traumas and issues
- Deeper connection with oneself
N.B. While it’s important to recognise that Kambo cannot specifically be claimed to cure anything (there is not enough data or clinical research to back up any health claims), many thousands of people around the globe are experiencing its benefits and realising its potential as an incredibly valuable and versatile tool for addressing spiritual and emotional challenges as well as for the healing of various mental and physical forms of disease.
Kambo has helped many people suffering from various (chronic) diseases, such as:
- Chronic Fatigue
- Chronic Pain
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- High Blood Pressure
- Vascular Problems
- Fertility Issues
- Recurrent Infections
“I have worked with Kambo to help me with anxiety and depression. It is always very intense, but brings a lot to work with and integrate afterwards. It feels like Kambo helps “loosen” what is stuck (emotions, traumas etc.) and brings it to the surface, making it possible for you to work through it and let it go.
Mau takes into account all insecurities or anxieties about the Kambo you might have, and explains the process thoroughly while also allowing your feelings to take the space they need. He is focused on you, but does not put himself in the way of your experience with Kambo. He is there to help and guide you through the session, and does so without interfering, letting the medicine do what it needs to do.
The time afterwards is also a big part of the process and Mau helps you to understand that. I can always reach out to him in the days/weeks/months after the session for support. He always facilitates a safe space where there is room for anything to come up.”
When working with Kambo, safety is of paramount importance. As an IAKP (International Association of Kambo Practitioners) licensed practitioner, I have been trained to work with this medicine in a safe and responsible way. The IAKP is a worldwide, non-profit organisation that makes itself strong for the proliferation and legality of the use of Kambo, protecting the medicine, the tribes, the frog, its practitioners and the countless people who have benefitted from this beautiful medicine. It ensures the highest standards of safety and responsibility are observed by its practitioners, and regularly updates safety guidelines and distributes relevant new information and research regarding Kambo. All practitioners are required to abide by a strict code of ethics, and Kambo given according to the standards set by the IAKP is completely safe.
How it Works
Kambo can either be received in a private session or in a circle-setting with multiple participants. Kambo should only be received from a properly trained practitioner administering and supervising the treatments at all times.
A Kambo treatment is intense but fast. The physical effects are immediate and can be uncomfortable, and in most cases involve purging (vomiting). Therefore, before a Kambo treatment you will need to fast for at least 6 hours so as not to have any food in the stomach, then right before the beginning of the treatment you will be asked to drink a large amount of water, which will act as a carrier for the purging. Not every Kambo treatment is necessarily unpleasant however, and certainly no two treatments are ever the same. The effects are over within 20 – 40 minutes.
When the process is finished, you may feel tired and need to rest. Within a short time, usually an hour or so, you will feel much better and you can drink and eat normally again. Usually within a day or so, depending on your state of health, you will start to feel the real benefits.
Sometimes, in situations where Kambo is used to treat chronic health conditions, an effect called the Herxheimer reaction (or herxing) can occur, where, because of a strong detoxification process, a condition can temporarily get worse before it gets better. This is a natural, well-studied and well-understood part of many healing processes.

This is not a complete comprehensive list. If you have any concerns or serious health issues, it’s important to disclose these prior to treatment to ensure that Kambo is suitable and safe for you to work with.
Extra caution or consideration is required in the following cases. It’s important to disclose any of these prior to treatment:
- If you’re taking or have recently stopped taking any medications
- If you’re taking slimming, serotonin and/or sleeping supplements

It’s helpful to note that if you’re menstruating at the time of your treatment, Kambo will most likely cause your flow to increase for 24 to 36 hours, due to its vasodilation properties.
If you are interested in Kambo and would like to receive more information, discuss the medicine, protocols, possibilities and pricing, or plan an appointment for a private session, feel free to get in touch.
Aside from a private session in your own home, you can also join a Kambo circle, where multiple people receive Kambo in a single setting. Receiving Kambo this way is a unique and powerful experience while also being cheaper compared to a private session. If you have a group of people who want to receive Kambo, it is also possible to privately organise a closed circle at a suitable location. I try to organise circles periodically and can provide information and possibilities upon request. If you are interested in joining or organising a Kambo circle don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
